This decision will result in profound public health consequences and greater health risks
“The Supreme Court’s decision on Friday, June 24, overturning Roe v. Wade will affect tens of millions of people around the country, a disproportionate number of whom will have lower socioeconomic status. It will also affect those of us in public health who will need to act with enhanced vigor to ensure the health and well-being of women and children,” said Dr. Blayne Cutler, President and CEO of Heluna Health, a non-profit organization based in Los Angeles that supports and provides population health services.
“This decision will result in profound public health consequences and greater health risks. Studies show approximately 60,000 women each year in the U.S. experience severe maternal morbidity—significant short- or long-term health consequences from labor and delivery. We need to prepare for increased need for the services that we and our partners provide, such as prenatal care, patient navigation, breastfeeding counseling, and nutrition programs to ensure positive maternal health outcomes.
“In light of today’s Supreme Court decision, Heluna Health reaffirms our deep commitment to the health and well-being of women and infants, and by extension, to all of those who love and support them.”
